Your Guide to Understanding Siding Terminology

You may be unfamiliar to some of them, making it difficult to understand what they mean or communicate your ideas. Batten

Batten is a strip of wood used to seal joints in wooden siding. It is the smaller component that goes between the boards.

Fascia

A fascia is a horizontal board that covers the intersection of the top of an exterior wall and the overhanging lower edge of the roof. It is the material covering the ends of rafters.

Soffit

This is the material covering the underside of an eave, overhang, or cornice. An exterior renovation services provider installs the soffit lengthwise from wall to fascia. 

Course

It refers to a row of panels that run the length of the house from one side to the other. In vertical siding, it is a row of panels running from top to bottom.

Channel

It is the area where siding or soffit panels are inserted.

Drip Cap

Also called head flashing, it is a piece of trim that keeps water away from the top of vertical siding.

Buttlock

This is the bottom section of a panel of vinyl siding. It locks into a previously installed panel to keep the siding from moving.
